Health Problems

The American Hairless Terrier is a healthy breed, compared to the rest of the hairless breeds. It's common to see skin rashes, that usually go away on their own. They do need protection from the cold, whether that is a sweater or other forms of dog clothing. They do not have sweat glands, so they can face heat exhaustion if being outside to long.

They are fairly active and require at least 20-30 minutes of exercise every day. They can tear up your yard if you leave them unattended and not exercised for long periods of time. They love playing fetch, or just running around in the yard, Long walks is also suitable for this breed. They can be apartment dwellers if they get the necessary exercise.

Origin

The American Hairless Terrier originated in the United states in 1972 when a litter of rat terrier had a completely hairless puppy. It became the loved pet of Willie and Edwin Scott of Louisiana, USA. They named their hairless dog Josephine. Josephine only had one hairless dog in her first 8 years, it wasn't until one of her last breeding she had a litter of two hairless pups, One male One Female. The Scotts produced this breed playing close attention to the well being and health of the breed. This breed is truly remarkable while breeding the hairless gene, health has never been sacrificed.
